Visit the holy site of Milk Grotto, a shrine in a cave where it is believed Mary stopped to nurse baby Jesus, while trying to escape Herod’s soldiers. Supposedly, a drop of milk fell on the limestone rocks while she was breastfeeding, turning the cave a pearly white color. Today, a small 19th-century Franciscan chapel rises over the grotto, which was restored in 2007. Grotto of Our Lady or Milk Grotto, is a Catholic chapel in Bethlehem, in the West Bank of the State of Palestine, erected in 1872. Since Byzantine times, the place has been a center of Christian pilgrimage, maintained since its last erection together with its Marian shrine and monastery by the Custody of the Holy Land of the Order of the Friars Minor of the Catholic Church in Palestine
