Admire the grand scale and ornate design of Santa Prisca de Taxco, a place of worship that stands as a testament to the historic wealth of the mining town during the 18th century. Built between 1751 and 1758, the cathedral's stone exterior has a pink hue and reflects a bold, but detailed baroque style. The opulent cathedral was built under the command of Jose de la Borda, a Catalan mine owner, and one of the richest men in the region. The exhorbitant expense of the building project, however, nearly bankrupted him. Once the tallest building in the country, the cathedral's interior showcases nine floor-to-ceiling, gold-covered altarpieces, as well as paintings by Miguel Cabrera. Put Santa Prisca de Taxco on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Taxco trip builder.

  • This is a beautifully kept church is famously beautiful. Read the other reviews as you could see that this fantastic place holds so much history. To sit here and enjoy the history and craftsmanship.
  • What a beautifully designed church. It is the heart of the town. Beautiful Inside and out. Once inside everywhere you lay eyes on you see intricate designs. The silver Virgen de Guadalupe is life size and is a testament of Taxco being the capital of silver of Mexico. I know you can ask about climbing the towers to get a view of the city, we visited while they were doing baptisms and didn’t know who to ask but if you have the chance definitely do it!
