El Charco del Ingenio
Adventure across El Charco del Ingenio, a nature reserve and botanical garden that protects and displays a vast array of Mexican plant life. Cacti of many shapes and sizes form a large part of the collection--many considered rare, threatened, or nearing extinction. Take a guided tour to learn about the different varieties and the efforts to save those most at risk. Look for bird sanctuaries dotted throughout the park, and the interactive garden particularly popular with kids. A unique garden in that it mainly entails cacti. There are probably other groups of plants in the warmer season but not sure. Option to walk on the southern side of the water from the entrance or if more adventurous go around to the north side. However, views are same. Recommend trail or hiking shoes more so than regular sneakers. Cows graze the hillside. For the most hardy, can walk from Centro to garden in about forty-five minutes nearly straight up the whole way. This is an opportunity to see some of the private and upscale homes and architecture that is part of the attraction at this elevation. Otherwise, get a taxi for elderly.

So glad we visited the gardens. As someone from Northern Europe (Scotland) it was amazing to see cacti and the other arid climate plants in there native environment. It was a delight going round the whole park with the west view point and the canyons being the highlight. Great place to visit with great staff. The new visitor reception building (under construction when we visited) looks like it will be amazing.
