Canada de la Virgen
See the indigenous archaeological site of Canada de la Virgen, an ancient temple complex belonging to the native Otomi people. Discovered in 1998 on private property, the site has only recently opened to the public. Take a guided tour of the complex to learn about the history of the ethnic group that inhabited these parts for thousands of years, and to acquaint yourself with their culture and traditions. View the ruins of the pyramids, thought to be ceremonial burial grounds, and climb the sloped structures for good views of the surroundings. Put Canada de la Virgen and other San Miguel de Allende attractions into our San Miguel de Allende trip itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

This is so worth visiting! You have to schedule a tour, and is not something that you can see on your own.

The staff is terrible. Terrible. The website advertises tours beginning at 11:00 a.m. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. and were told that no, no tours would start until noon. We would have to wait an hour...

If you travel to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, strongly consider taking a trip 20 miles outside of town and visiting this magnificent archeological site. I highly recommend taking the tour with Albert Coffee, who has been involved in excavating and researching this site since 2004. He is an absolute wealth of knowledge and very entertaining. Because these ruins are at 7000 feet of elevation and the tour is approximately two hours over hilly terrain, wear comfortable shoes and you should be in halfway decent shape.

It was an amazing activity about 30 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende. The archaeological site and history told by our guide, was very informative. This is a great way to get away from the city and enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace.
