See the indigenous archaeological site of Canada de la Virgen, an ancient temple complex belonging to the native Otomi people. Discovered in 1998 on private property, the site has only recently opened to the public. Take a guided tour of the complex to learn about the history of the ethnic group that inhabited these parts for thousands of years, and to acquaint yourself with their culture and traditions. View the ruins of the pyramids, thought to be ceremonial burial grounds, and climb the sloped structures for good views of the surroundings. Put Canada de la Virgen and other San Miguel de Allende attractions into our San Miguel de Allende trip itinerary planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Really incredible place to visit. If you are in San Miguel visiting, this is worth the trip to check out. It's about a 2.5 hour guided tour and you have to walk about 1.5km to get there after the bus drops you off. There is also some elevation when walking so account for that and bring lots of water. I took a ton of photos and wish I had taken even more.
  • Park your car . Join a tour bus that leaves the reception building on the hour so try to be there just before 10 or 11 or 12 or whenever you plan on arriving. Entry charge is very cheap at $39 pesos each BUT you have to wear a mask ALL the time you are here . Understandable when you are inside a building or on a bus but a long walk in the open air , away from any crowds as there are very few visitors, with a face mask on ? We really wanted to visit the ruins but didn't want to walk 3km with a mask on . We will return when state restrictions are relaxed in the future though as it looks an interesting place and it's small size makes for a more original experience than the major tourist sites I imagine.
