Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Oaxaca

Following the first groundbreaking in 1535, the massive cathedral took some 160 years to complete due to earthquake damage. The bold Baroque exterior features locally mined green caldera stone, the same as many other buildings in town. Inside, the neoclassical design includes an altar with a statue of Our Lady of the Assumption, crafted in Italy in the late 19th century, as well as a locally made pipe organ dating from 1711.
