Built atop an ancient meeting place Zocalo serves as a center of activity in the capital, hosting protests, celebrations, and the bustle of daily life. Originally a nexus of commerce in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, the square encompasses an entire city block and has drawn visitors for more than seven centuries. Wander the expansive plaza and marvel at the surrounds, which range from pre-colonial relics to grander buildings, such as the presidential palace and national cathedral. Grab a bite to eat or a drink from one of the many surrounding restaurants, or pick up a memento of your trip at a souvenir stand. Keep your eyes peeled for the musical performances and Aztec dances that frequently take place in the square. Take a look at our Mexico City trip tool to schedule your visit to Zocalo and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

We got to see the flag coming down and being carefully wrapped up for safekeeping by the guards. Huge plaza for people watching.

I visited the Zocalo during the exposition of the Sistine Chapel. The main plaza looks incredible. It is a very well done experience. I definitely recommend going. The waiting line was like 20 minutes. If you take the time to read and admire all the art that takes part into this incredible audiovisual experience it will take you a little bit more than one hour. Photos and videos inside the Sistine Chapel Replica are strictly forbidden. If you don't want someone from security or the staff checking your photo gallery do not even have your cellphone or cameras in your hands. They are very serious about it.

We arrived at 4.30am local time from London Heathrow via Aeromexico in mid January. It was a chilly 8c. We arrived at our hotel at 730 am and rested for a couple of hours before heading out on a walking tour of the historic area. By this time it was warming up and now bright and sunny. We found the historic area full of beautiful buildings and as the Sunday morning developed the city became a bustling hive of activity.
