The largest cathedral in the Americas, Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Mexico has a rich, diverse history, beginning with its chosen location on a former Aztec sacred precinct. As you walk the cathedral’s four vast interior domes. filled with five naves and 14 chapels, you will be walking through three centuries of construction, starting in 1567 and finally ending in 1813. A patchwork of styles, originally built from the stones of a temple dedicated to the Aztec god of war, the basilica is now an extraordinary blend of baroque, neo-classical, gothic and Mexican Churrigueresque architecture. We walked through the cathedral which was beautiful but the art is in need of cleaning. It was interesting to see how the cathedral is sinking. Make sure to see the pendulum that marks the movement..... more

Plenty of good small rustic hotels located in the historic district. They don't have many amenities but the experience is priceless and there all within walking distance of the church. Need to be careful with some of the roof top restaurants. This time they were charging 100 pesos goes to go up per person. The plaza has plenty of vendors and Aztec dancers.

This is the largest catholic church in the Americas. It is singularly impressive due to its sheer size. The entry is free and you may wonder about the church except in the main nave where the faithful do pray and celebrate mass. There are several interesting chapels and you may climb to the roof to admire the Zocalo from its vantage point. If you look carefully you will notice that the church is in need of some repairs as the stucco work is coming off in places and cracking in others. Interesting tradition is that the church bells will start ringing 15 minutes before mass, at noon for instance, and they will ring for the entire 15 minutes until noon, to let the believers know to come and pray.
