Inspect a wonderfully vibrant variety of plants at Vallarta Botanical Gardens, an environmentally minded site set on 8 ha (20 ac) of native forest and perfectly manicured landscape. Hike the extensive trails through the flora, and keep one eye on the canopy looking out for exotic birds, especially at the beginning or end of the day. It's worth bringing some bug spray and considering wearing long trousers and sleeves to protect against biting insects. Be sure to bring some swimwear and a towel so you can cool off with a dip in the Rio Horcones. This was perhaps our favourite activity during our visit to Puerta Vallarta - even the kids loved it. The collection of orchids and succulents is spectacular. The grounds are impeccably maintained and the restaurant and gift shop are beautiful. We enjoyed seeing the vanilla plantation and walking some of the trails. There were lots of interesting birds and lizards to see as well. It is definitely worth the short and pretty mountain drive to visit this lovely spot.

The Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens is not to be missed! Whether you're a resident of Puerto Vallarta or a visitor, the Botanical Gardens offers an escape from the busy and often hot an humid confines of the city to a lush, verdant, and cool island in the mountains. Colorful displays of flowers, plants, trees, and shrubs are everywhere, along with their names and descriptions. Paths crisscross the property, and one can hike down to the river for a swim. A first class restaurant is available for those who work up and appetite, and it will not disappoint with its great bar, tasty food, and excellent, attentive service. I have visited the Botanical Gardens many times over the years, and never once have I been disappointed! Go!
