Setubal District travel guide
Inhabited since ancient times, Setubal District drew both the Phoenicians and the Romans with its large deposits of sea salt. Today, the region serves as a major vacation destination, offering visitors good roads, impeccable beaches, and a varied landscape of fragrant orange groves, orchards, and vineyards. The district's eponymous capital, one of Portugal's oldest and largest cities, sits on the banks of the Sado River, a lush area known for its production of outstanding muscatel wines. A growing number of travelers include this city on their itineraries, drawn by its cobbled Old Town and 16th-century fort, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding region.
