Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
When in Bogota, make a side trip to see Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira in Zipaquira, approximately 54 minutes away. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro), identify plant and animal life at Jardin Botanico de Bogota Jose Celestino Mutis, tour the pleasant surroundings at Monserrate, and steep yourself in history at Bolivar plaza.

You can do a combination of shuttle and flight from Santa Marta to Bogota in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of bus and flight; or drive.
