More than 20 million people call Cairo their home and, as soon as you set foot in the sprawling metropolis, it's evident they make it crowded and chaotic, but also exuberant and charming.
Mastaba of Ti and Church of St Sergius and Bacchus will appeal to history buffs. Get some cultural insight at Zamalek (Gezira Island) and Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan. Venture out of the city with trips to Step Pyramid of Djoser (in Saqqara) and Bent Pyramid (in Giza). There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Cave Church, admire the striking features of Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary), take in the spiritual surroundings of Al-Azhar Mosque, and contemplate the long history of Mosque of Ibn Tulun.
