Part of Serengeti National Park, Grumeti River serves as a safari area known for animal river crossings during great migrations of large herbivores. Basks of crocodiles, herds of hippos, zebras, buffalos, lions, giraffes, and black-and-white colobus monkeys are among the many wildlife species native to the area. Migrations usually take place from late May to early July, but safari tours in open-sided vehicles are offered year-round. The area is best accessed by small light aircraft, and there are many small airfields nearby.
