Capital city of the eponymous state, Oaxaca relies heavily on its colonial charm, its core a maze of tree-shaded alleys flanked by photogenic mansions, government buildings, and old churches.

Get a sense of the local culture at Templo Mayor Museum and Palacio de Bellas Artes. Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana) and Zona Arqueologica Teotihuacan will appeal to history buffs. Step out of Mexico City with an excursion to Rancho El Cajon in La Paz--about 48 minutes away. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Frida Kahlo Museum, take in the spiritual surroundings of Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe, appreciate the extensive heritage of Zocalo, and take a stroll through Coyoacan.

When traveling from Oaxaca in May, plan for little chillier days and about the same nights in Mexico City: temperatures range from 79°F by day to 56°F at night.
