Convent of San Bernardino of Siena, Valladolid

4.3
Convent of San Bernardino of Siena stands as Xochimilco's cultural and historic center. An old parish church built in the 16th century over a pre-Hispanic temple, the convent features a simple beige stone wall façade, long corridors of thick arches, and a grass courtyard. Inside stands a towering altar lavished in gold decoration and religious icons. Observe numerous old paintings and frescos hanging throughout. Head up to the organ loft or bell tower for encompassing views of the plaza. A nighttime light show tells town's history accompanied by a light projection on the church's façade. • I really enjoyed my visit here. The museum itself is pretty sparse but the inner courtyard was a great place to catch a little shade and take a few photos. The church itself has an ornate floor to ceiling rereso that is breathtaking.
  • Don't get me wrong, this is not a piramid or a cenote, so don't expect a kind of WOW effect by visiting the convent, but if you want to see part of real, calm, Yucatan state, this is a great spot. If you are lucky you will see kids running around barefoot, some locals going to the mess, or Maya locals selling exotic delicious fruits
