Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, Oaxaca

4.8
Visit Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman, a prime example of New Spanish Baroque architecture dating back to the 16th century. Built during a period of over 200 years, the church has had quite a turbulent history, having suffered from earthquakes throughout the centuries. On the facade, which is flanked by two bell towers, find a statue of Santo Domingo de Guzman, who founded the Dominican order. Inside, there you can appreciate the liberal use of gold all throughout, which creates a warm atmosphere when candles are lit during evening mass. • The Santo Domingo de Guzman Cathedral was a large spectacular cathedral located along the pedestrian street Macedonio Alcala, north of the main square in Oaxaca, featuring incredibly beautiful architecture on and ornate details. One of the most amazing churches I have visited! In front of the cathedral, there were rows of perfectly positioned cacti and succulent plants growing on both sides of the pathway leading to the church. When I stepped into the church, I was instantly amazed at what I was seeing. The interior of the church was massive and the walls and ceiling were covered with intricately detailed carvings of various saints. The wall at the front of the church behind the stage appeared to be gold from floor to ceiling and also featured detailed carvings. It was absolutely beautiful. There was a smaller sanctuary that stemmed off from the main one which also featured a smaller gold wall and gorgeous ceilings. The details were so ornate. This was definitely one of the most beautiful and impressive churches I have had the opportunity to visit in my travels through Central America and Mexico. The church is open from 7 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm to visitors, so make sure to visit between those times. It's absolutely free to enter! I highly recommend taking the time to visit this church when in Oaxaca. Visited in November 2017.
  • This church is amazing. Gold everywhere. The level of craftsmanship is on another level. A must see.
