The Aztec chiefs who fled Tenochtitlan on the bridge linking the two cities resumed the battle in vain. The Templo Mayor of the city has 7 layers of construction, it is smaller than that of Tenochtitlan but dedicated to the same gods that of death on the right, that of rain on the left. A compound surrounds the sacred area. Much of the Aztec buildings disappeared under Spanish houses in colonial times and the horrible Mexican concrete blocks of our time. Remains of frescoes on activities such as hunting and fishing have been found during recent excavations. The 2017 earthquake has damaged the area a little.
