Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe, Mexico City

Explore the massive, elaborate structure of Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe, the central place of worship for the country's patron saint. Located on the spot where the Virgin of Guadalupe allegedly appeared in the 16th century, this structure remains one of Catholicism's major pilgrimage sites, known for housing the cloak of Saint Juan Diego. Erected in the 1970s, the circular church can hold up to 10,000 worshippers and boasts 15,000 niches in its main crypt. The shrine also houses a famous image of the Virgin, considered one of the most important religious depictions in Mexico. Right next to this landmark you can also visit an older church from the 18th century, known for its impressive facade and marble statues. • The Basilica is a world in itself where multiple groups of pilgrims arrive to honor Mexico's patrona. It is a strong spiritual experience to enter and approach the electric belts where you can be easily overwhelmed by emotion if you are Catholic as you look up to see the Tilma of Guadalupe.. But if you are of a different belief you will be exposed to the great reverence that Mexicans show all around this incredible shrine.
  • The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is located in Zumarraga which is around 25-30 minutes ride via Uber from Bolivar street where our hotel is located. The Basilica is huge and beautiful. There is an entrance wherein you can see the clothe where the venerated image of the Virgin. Beside the Basilica there are two old churches. If you are a Catholic this place you should not miss. The architectures are simply amazing. The two old churches are not leveled if you try to look into the details maybe because of the earthquakes and there are also some cracks. A must see if you are visiting Mexico City.
