Looking out from the heart of Convento de San Antonio de Padua its clear to see why Izamal is known as the “Yellow City.” A sprawling square enclosed by 75 egg-yolk-yellow arches, the open air atrium of the monastery is second in size only to the Vatican. Previously a center for worship of a supreme Mayan sun god, today a Franciscan convent stands grandly over the atrium, built from fragments of the Mayan temple in 1561. Walk the site to examine the remnants of Mayan and post-colonial history that echo through the architecture. The monastery is a fascinating sight, which the Spaniards built on top of an enormous acropolis which stood in honor of the sun god. The convent is striking, painted a beautiful yellow color like the rest of the town. It’s a good shady spot to rest and also a reminder of all that was lost due to the brutality of colonialism.
Lovely place to visit. Very clean city. The carriage ride 200 Pesos for 4 persons. 30 minutes. Good value. Pope John Paul II visited here in 1993. The "Yellow City".
