Santuario de Cristo Rey, Guanajuato

#3 of 11 in Historic Sites in Guanajuato
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Admire the artistry and poignancy of Santuario de Cristo Rey, a religious sculpture set in a scenic spot. Sitting atop a mountain, the 1944 statue of Jesus Christ replaced a smaller version destroyed by bombers during the anti-religious regime of President Plutarco Elias Calles. As such, it has come to symbolize religious freedom in the country, serving as a reminder of the secular/sectarian Cristero War of the 1920s. Displaying a striking art deco style, the monument attracts visitors with its aesthetic appeal, as well as its message.
