Sitting atop a mountain, the 1944 statue of Jesus Christ replaced a smaller version destroyed by bombers during the anti-religious regime of President Plutarco Elias Calles. As such, it has come to symbolize religious freedom in the country, serving as a reminder of the secular/sectarian Cristero War of the 1920s. Displaying a striking art deco style, the monument attracts visitors with its aesthetic appeal, as well as its message.     Driving thru Guanajuato we saw a Monestery perched on a hill about 30 minutes from our hotel. Up around 2800 meters. Drove up. Pretty church, easy drive and the statue well worth the trip  more »
