Admire an old and storied building at Alhondiga de Granaditas, a former grain storehouse now containing an art and history museum. Built between 1798 and 1808, the building displays an impressive neoclassical architectural style and bears traces of its main uses, as a warehouse, military barracks, and then prison. Turned into a fortress by Spanish troops and loyalists in 1810, when a group of rebels led by Miguel Hidalgo lay siege to the building, the doors were eventually set ablaze and the rebels killed everyone inside. When the rebellion was quashed, the four main insurgents, including Hidalgo, were executed and their heads were hung from the four corners of the fort. They stayed there until Mexico gained its independence 10 years later. Acting as a prison from 1864-1948, the building now contains several murals and exhibits dedicated to heroes of the independence movement, and a large collection of pre-Columbian art. • Visited this important place in Mexican Independence. The guide was so thorough in the information he provided that it was literally information overload. Enjoyed listening to him and seeing the restored rooms. If you like history and are interested in learning the importance of this place then take the time.
  • If you like history and colonial architecture this is the place to visit ( Guanajuato , Mexico ) is a fantastic place to visit with buildings from days gone by , originally settled by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500's , winding cobble stone streets and ally ways , beautiful zocalos surrounded by restaurants and lots of shops with local goods ( its a feast for the senses ), take a a city tour to the mummy museum, walking tour and listen to the local stories ( great ) , visit the "callejon del beso" with that special someone , finally the food always a treat and great tasting .... be sure to take a light jacket and very comfortable shoes 😊
