Peruse the shops at Mercado 28, a traditional-type Mexican market that visitors use to hunt for souvenirs and knick-knacks. Take advantage of the area's outdoor restaurants and coffee shops to participate in the bustling local atmosphere. If you find something you like, don't be afraid to barter for a price you are comfortable with. Keep in mind that most of the shops do not accept credit or debit card transactions, however, there are many banks and ATMs in the surrounding area. This was a maze of a market. It's pretty much just a massive market for souvenirs, which a lot of the people were selling the same stuff. If you're looking for souvenirs that say Cancun then it's a good place to visit. It says flea market but it's all new stuff, so not a true flea market in my opinion. It was still nice to walk through and see the stuff but was not there to buy souvenirs. My wife found a nice Mexican blanket and a couple of hand crafted things so at least she was able to buy things.

Mercado 28 is a great place to get totally away from all the development of the hotels and actually see what a typical working class neighborhood looks like in Cancun. It is also a way better option to for you to get all of your shopping done for keepsakes or gifts without getting ripped off like you would at shops closer to your hotel. You will find tons of miscellaneous Cancun themed merchandise, swimwear, traditional Mexican embroidered dresses and men’s shirts, pottery, hand crafted wooden toys, and amazing quality leather shoes, carry on luggage, purses, & wallets. Don’t be afraid to haggle and shop around first before purchasing. Lots of people have said that they can’t handle the constant efforts of the merchants and that it overwhelms them. Remember, that’s the whole point of coming to the market! It’s their job to try to sell all day long! A firm “No gracias” works just fine and carry on! There are also lots of different style restaurants in the food plaza to appeal to any regional Mexican food craving you might have! If you have a rental car like we did, there are free public parking lots outside. We enjoyed our shopping trip and didn’t have any problems or felt uncomfortable in any way. I will take a shopping day here over the uptight fancy boutiques at my hotel any day! Enjoy!
