Calakmul Archaeological Zone, Campeche

#1 of 11 in Parks in Campeche
Within Mexico's largest tract of tropical jungle lies Calakmul Archaeological Zone, site of one of the largest and most powerful Mayan cities. In 1931, excavation here unearthed temples, burial crypts, and over 6,000 buildings of the ancient city. Climb two of the tallest Mayan pyramids ever discovered, and enjoy the views from atop. Count over 120 stelae (commemorative stone slabs), more than at any other Mayan site; some date back to 435 CE. The region surrounding the site is rich in wildlife, including spider monkeys, anteaters, and countless species of birds. • Essential to my notice contact a guide to visit the archaeological area and understand some of the architecture and history of this fantastic site. In addition, the guide offers a walk through the jungle with the possibility to recognize the local fauna. The birds stand out with their incredible songs, the howler monkeys and with a little surrre also the Jaguars or the cougar.. my advice is to contact Graciliano Jimenez De la Rosa, also known as Chano (9381563454). You can also ask to see the exit of the bats from the cave: an amazing spectacle!!

  • are 60 km from the entrance until you reach the archaeological zone, you have to pay 3 fees in total, at the main entrance $50 pesos per person for the ejido, the first 30 km the road is very good, reaching 30 km, you have to pay 73 pesos per person for a tax of the biosphere reserve, none of the first applies discount to minors, students etc., the next 30 km at the moment are in bad condition, there are many potholes so when driving slow it will take longer to arrive, on the way there are many branches and trunks lying , at the same time you can see some of the fauna, from wild turkeys, toucans, pheasants and deer among others, wonderful, when at last you arrive at the entrance you have to pay 70 pesos, here applies free cost for students and pensioners .. If you want a guide you have to hire it from the main entrance, also bring water since there is no store, bathrooms yes. the road is long but it is worth it to arrive and see these Mayan wonders, there are spider monkeys and howler monkeys in the trees, very used to seeing wet, if they are lucky you will hear them howling what makes being more exciting in the area, are three pyramids great that you can climb if you reach your breath, try to read a little or research on youtube before you get to the area to get an idea of what you are seeing, the city that in its boom, was the most powerful and to date the largest. it's a full-day adventure I hope it will serve you
