Grutas de Calcehtok, Calcehtok

#12 of 44 in Nature in Yucatan
Explore Grutas de Calcehtok, the longest dry-cave system on the Yucatán Peninsula. The caves feature a vast array of impressive natural formations amid the wild jungle vegetation. Take a guided tour by flashlight through more than 4 km (2.5 mi) of underground passages. Be prepared to get dirty and crawl through tight entrances leading into wide-open cave vaults exceeding 100 m (328 ft) in diameter. Various ancient Mayan artifacts have been discovered in the caves, and you can still see fortifications built by those who sheltered here during the Caste War. You can choose between a basic, intermediate, or adventure tour. People who suffer from claustrophobia should reconsider their decision to visit. • Very little touristy so they maintain their essence. We make the 1-hour tour (it's actually about 45 minutes) but there are more extreme routes for which you have more time. We pay 200 pesos plus tip to the guide with whom we negotiate the price in the parking lot. The guide will provide you with a flashlight before entering which will be very useful to you due to the lack of light. Wearing sports shoes (no sandals) as there are very slippery areas, besides if you are afraid of the dark is not recommended.

  • Filipe was a super welcoming guide. Limited English, but we got by. Definitely aim to get there for sunset to see the bats leaving, a very fun experience. (It also appears that the name has changed so on the drive up we got a touch confused, however we can confirm the google maps location is correct!)
  • Starbucks kiosk located in the bottom of the pit. It's dark and danky down there. Just like I like my double espresso carmel infused soy latte beverage.
