Grutas de Calcehtok, Calcehtok

#12 of 44 in Nature in Yucatan
Explore Grutas de Calcehtok, the longest dry-cave system on the Yucatán Peninsula. The caves feature a vast array of impressive natural formations amid the wild jungle vegetation. Take a guided tour by flashlight through more than 4 km (2.5 mi) of underground passages. Be prepared to get dirty and crawl through tight entrances leading into wide-open cave vaults exceeding 100 m (328 ft) in diameter. Various ancient Mayan artifacts have been discovered in the caves, and you can still see fortifications built by those who sheltered here during the Caste War. You can choose between a basic, intermediate, or adventure tour. People who suffer from claustrophobia should reconsider their decision to visit. • The grottos of Calcehtok Caves are a jewel hidden beneath the yucatecan floor that definitely deserves to be visited and explored. Our Tour was the hand of a local guide, as it can not be otherwise, and we opted for the longest duration and complexity that we were offered. We Were about 4.5 hrs underground, moving through passageways and spectacular corridors, traversing what was obviously the natural habitat of literally thousands of bats, albino invertebrates, etc. We Were Able to observe in close halls where rites, stalactites and stalagmites were once celebrated, fused with abandoned pre-Hispanic ceramics. Feel the absolute silence and feel that we approached to the heart of the Earth. It's Not a kind of activity I would have done before, but I'm sure I'll look for new places to revive this kind of emotion. This experience was great from any point of view!

  • Filipe was a super welcoming guide. Limited English, but we got by. Definitely aim to get there for sunset to see the bats leaving, a very fun experience. (It also appears that the name has changed so on the drive up we got a touch confused, however we can confirm the google maps location is correct!)
  • Starbucks kiosk located in the bottom of the pit. It's dark and danky down there. Just like I like my double espresso carmel infused soy latte beverage.
