City of Cyrene, Al Bayda

#3 of 18 in Historic Sites in Libya
Explore the ancient, World Heritage-listed Greek and Roman city of City of Cyrene, once called the "Athens of Africa." Now in ruins, the archeological site lies on the top of a cliff, holding temples dedicated to gods Zeus, Apollo, and Demeter. As you walk around, you'll see the careful planning of the buildings, half-standing walls and columns, as well as statues dating back to both Greek and Roman rules. City of Cyrene is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Al Bayda Edition.

  • Cyrene was founded by the Batto king around 630 BC by the Dorians (Greeks) who came from Thera, today's Santorini, is now one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Rich in important and conspicuous monuments such as the wall of the Erme, the sanctuary of Apollo, the temple of Zeus rebuilt by the mission Stucchi/Frigerio of dimensions similar to the Parthenon, the Agora ', the Naval Monument, the theatre, statues and Hellenic sculptures of exquisite Invoice are just some of the testimonies that Cirene hosts along its plain that from 600 meters slowly degrades to sea. Unesco World Heritage Site Cirene presents in addition to the above mentioned monuments a wonderful natural landscape and a port, Appolonia, architecturally superb. There have been many times species in quiet years and each time it was a real bath of culture to start from its foundation and its mitisiology. It was hit by a disastrous earthquake of which CCI are still evident traces. Hopefully in better times. The existing accommodation facilities in the surroundings are mediocre but useful because a real visit takes at least two days to enjoy it fully and without tiring. You can read a little of the extensive documentation available on the net before visiting it because the guides do what they could. The weather is always wonderful.
