Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande, Antigua

#3 of 14 in Historic Sites in Antigua
Church · Historic Site
Visit the Iglesia de San Francisco El Grande, where lies the tomb of Central America’s first canonized saint, Peter of Saint Joseph Betancur. He was known for founding the Hospital of Belen and the miracles he performed; the site brings thousands of pilgrims to this church each year. The church was severely destroyed by earthquakes throughout the 1700s and not rebuilt until the 1960s. Its Spanish-American baroque facade has sixteen vaulted niches and twisted solomonic columns. Various areas, including the bell and clock towers, remain in partial ruin. Admire the main altar and the paintings of saints throughout the church.
