Sainte-Chapelle, Paris

#5 of 4,866 in Historic Sites in France
Architectural Building · Church
Soaring stained glass windows beam a myriad of colored light onto the floor's rich tile mosaics inside Sainte-Chapelle. This house of worship is one of the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period Gothic architecture, and retains one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass anywhere in the world. Built by the French kings to house the relics of the Crown of Thorns, this "jewel box" structure has two levels and an impressive vaulted ceiling. • Cannot describe in words how beautiful this chapel is — it is truly a jewel in every single way. We had the good fortune of also being able to listen to a one-hour concert of Pachbel’s Canon in D...  more »

  • The security check process does take a while and there are usually queues but, to say the least, this is worth the wait. Once you get inside, your breath will be taken away by the sheer majesty of the place. The stained glass is absolutely incredible. I really don’t think pictures can do this justice and the atmosphere is phenomenal too. It’s true, that’s all there really is to see in there but it’s worth seeing. In a prime location in the centre of Paris and the staff were helpful enough.
  • Of course you can't miss this chapel.. Best stained glass chapel, I've visited allot of churches in Europe and this one is at the top. If your going to visit, go on a sunny day, and go in the morning when the sun is in the east, illuminating the chapel glass. The last time i was here I attended a very nice strings concert. It was a marvelous setting and evening.
