Torshavn Cathedral, Torshavn

Visible from miles away, Torshavn Cathedral impresses with its bright white walls and slated roof dating back to 1788. The Evangelical-Lutheran community has expanded the church over the years, but preserved the 1647 altarpiece standing on the north wall--don't miss this excellent piece of craftsmanship, depicting the Last Supper across a surface of 1 sq m (10.8 sq ft). Also look for the 18th-century bell, lavishly decorated by palmettes and a crowned emblem of The Danish East India Company--a reminder of Denmark's efforts to tame the North. • Made a day trip from Sørvágur to Tórshavn by bus ( beautiful scenery, no traffic jams ). I walked by this cathedral - it’s nice. Tórshavn is small - you will see it.  more »
  • Centrally located in Torshavn, the cathedral is also called Havnar Kirkja. In 1780, they started building the church and it was inaugurated in 1788. In the context of a rebuilding in 1865, the church was given its present appearance, the church is a white wooden church with golden edges and with a black-and-grab roof and is widely seen. The church has a beautiful bell game that plays every day at 15.00. The cathedral is open to-fr 16.30-18.00 from May-Sep. We were lucky and were allowed to enter. A beautiful bright church room with a bright blue ceiling/sky with stars. The baptismal fund is white with a brass baptism. When the church was built, there was ample space for the inhabitants of Torshavns, but there are probably later built balconies in the rear of the church with benches. There are from the ceiling 3 ships of which a Faroe Islands ship. The church was elected to cathedral in 1990 in connection with the restoration of the bishops ' Faroe Islands. The cathedral is used every year for the Lagting's opening Olavsøku July 29th where the Lagting, the Landsret, the wealthy man and the bishop go into procession for worship in Havnar Kirkja/the cathedral. So definitely worth a visit and even if you do not enter

  • A very beautiful church in the capital city Tórshavn. During a day trip to the capital city we just came across this church and wanted to click some photos. As we entered we got to know that there was a choir concert happening. It was very beautiful and serene to sit and listen to the group sing. The church's architecture is very beautiful. #localguides #solotravel
