Temple Abydos, Sohag

Must see · Ruin · Tourist Spot
Once a pivotal religious center and reportedly a gateway to the underworld, Temple Abydos is home to one of the best-preserved ancient Egyptian temples notable for its colorful reliefs and mysterious hieroglyphs. As the cult center of the god of the underworld, the center was a popular pilgrimage destination in Pharaonic times. In more recent history, this large archeological site attracted devotees of Dorothy Eady, a New Age practitioner who claimed to be a reincarnation of a temple priestess. The site features a royal necropolis, memorial temples, and several "forts,"--unusual tomb structures.
