Ramesseum (Mortuary Temple of Ramses II), Luxor

4.6
Ruin · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
On the west bank of the Nile, Ramesseum (Mortuary Temple of Ramses II) once featured a colossal statue of the famed pharaoh, only fragments of which survive to this day. The seated 17 m (57 ft) tall statue, which once stood in front of the entrance, dates back to the 13th century BCE, as does the rest of this World Heritage Site. Though most of the temple is in ruins now, you can still see some half-preserved wall decorations, such as reliefs depicting ancient battles and festivities. • A Must see. The remnants of the colossal statue of Ramses II.....was estimated to to be 1100 tons when standing in 1 piece. It's amazing..and huge! The rest of the temple is fascinating as well.
  • Temple provides a special atmosphere with its large statues and broken giant colossus. Don't go for there for its architectural value, cause temples like Medinat Habu are more beautiful. But it has something special about it...
