Twin carved-stone minarets define Al-Azhar Mosque, one of Cairo's largest sanctuaries and an Islamic university. Built in 970, the mosque features a white façade stressed with rosette and keel-arched panels cut in the Fatimid style. Accessed through the 15th century Barber's Gate, the mosque's three stately minarets overlook a huge courtyard while alabaster pillars support the large carpeted prayer hall. Admire Mamluk-period stone lattices of the residential quarters of the madrassas here as you escape in the midst of the city. A visit to Al-Azhar Mosque represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cairo trip itinerary maker app to plot your vacation.

A definite must-see, mostly well-organized, except for very poor places for ablution. They say they're renovating the proper ones. Let's see!

This mosque is highly regarded for its historical value, being one of the most important & revered mosque in Islam. It is a huge mosque with a wide courtyard inside, and a few minarets around the mosque symbolizing different eras & dynasties of the caliphates in Egypt. The prayer hall is huge, well-lit & cool although not being air-conditioned, the carpets are still new so quite comfortable for prayers. The ambiance is nice & calm for spiritual visitors. The toilets & ablution areas are well-maintained. The courtyard is wide, nicely tiled & clean enough for prayers. Usually religious classes are held here after prayers, delivered by renowned Islamic scholars which attracts both locals & foreigners visiting the mosque. And the atmosphere here during Ramadan is just awesome, which made it a must-visit mosque for Taraweeh prayers.
