Kitchner's Island, Aswan

#4 of 8 in Parks in Nile River Valley
Garden · Island
Home to botanical gardens, Kitchner's Island is known for experimental oil and fruit crops. This small oval-shaped island in the Nile was given as a reward to British consul Horatio Kitchener in the 1890s for his part in the Sudanese campaigns. The island was used as an experimental station for the introduction of new plants to Egypt, mainly for the timber industry. The 750 m (2,460 ft) long island has many walkways to view plants as well as a biological research station located at its southern tip. Get a felucca (Egyptian sailboat) ride to reach the island. • This is the Island I think that has on it the botanical gardens, which is listed separately on TripAdvisor. It’s a great place and I highly recommend.  more »
  • Nice for a walk.but nothing really special for a botanical garden. Not all threes are marked and feels like a mess inside.  more »
  • You have to hire someone to take you on a felucca or a boat to the island and then wait for you to take you back because there are no boats there. This is easy to do but just make sure you don’t overpay. The island itself is very beautiful- lots of trees and stunning views of the Nile. I recommend going close to sunset for the best views as it only takes about 45 minutes to walk through the whole island.
  • The view was wonderful and very colorful.
