Elephantine Island, Aswan

4.3
#2 of 8 in Parks in Nile River Valley
Island · Nature / Park
Known for its archaeological sites, Elephantine Island possibly played an important role in the ancient ivory trade. Though most of its old structures have perished with time, the island still maintains a serene and essentially rural atmosphere. Archeologists have discovered remains of many temples here, as well as a small step pyramid and two Nilometers--used by ancient Egyptians to measure water levels during the flood season. Don't miss a temple dedicated to the ram-headed god Khnum, one of ancient Egypt's oldest deities and the creator of the Nile.
