Rio Celeste, Tenorio Volcano National Park

#1 of 20 in Nature in Province of Guanacaste
Must see · Water Body · Nature / Park
Trek into the rainforest and observe the colorful waters of Rio Celeste. Located at the meeting point of two rivers, and near a dramatic waterfall, the water is colored by the special minerals found in the rocks and riverbed, creating an excellent scene to admire and photograph. Unfortunately, you can no longer swim in the vibrant waters, but the hike through the jungle and the chance to see the natural phenomenon make the experience worthwhile. Be sure to bring sturdy boots for the trail, and don’t forget your camera. • We spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica and this was my husband's favorite site. We rented a car and spent the night in a nearby hotel which allowed us to be there when the park opened. Definitely do it...  more »

  • An easy hike along the famous blue water of the Rio Celeste. Be sure to take plenty of water, waterproof shoes as well as rain jackets and umbrellas as the weather can turn very quickly. At one point there's a little hot spring bubbling in the river. I found this to be one of the most underrated parts of the walk. Geologically speaking it is really interesting to see bubbling blue water.
  • Avoid going on weekends when all the Ticos go, because the park closes once 500 visitors are inside. We got there at 11 and couldn’t go in for the rest of the day. We came back the next day (monday) and were almost alone. We were happy about this because we imagine the trails getting quite crowded. The sights are gorgeous and we highly recommend it! Bring good shoes and obviously your camera.
