Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Bolivar Department / Cartagena District / Cartagena / Walled City of Cartagena
Wander the historical streets of Walled City of Cartagena, an old district full of vibrant colonial architecture and heritage sites. Surrounded by 11 km (6.8 mi) of thick stone walls, the old city was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century. The vast fortifications, begun after an attack by Francis Drake, took two centuries in total to complete, as the city faced frequent damage from storms and pirate attacks. As well as the historical churches, mansions, plazas, and other buildings, the area boasts plentiful restaurants, cafes, and street vendors. Consider checking the cruise schedule before planning your visit: the old town clogs with tourists when several cruise ships unload on the same day. Walled City of Cartagena is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Cartagena Edition.

If the idea is to walk, from the beginning, the weather is impossible. There is a horde of street vendors of all that can be imagined - and more also - who constantly overwhelm by claiming to sell and that prevent walking calmly and contemplatively as you have to be constantly dodging them or rejecting their Offers. The vehicular traffic is in the most disrespectful possible, the pedestrian is helpless in the face of the unusual shortage of pedestrian paths to cross the roads, the vehicles do not respect the pedestrian transit, and the sidewalks are minuscule and bumpy, making it difficult to transit. The city is dirty and offers various unpleasant smells of various origins. They intend (and eventually manage) to charge for everything and ask for tips for the most mini-minimum services. Museums are pauperists: any old building or church is called a museum, they charge entrance ticket (obviously), they are all impacted and denatured inside (the structures, floors, ceilings, all intervened and without preserving their natural state) and there is a little explanatory signage hanging and already this, zero display of artifacts, relics or anything of cultural or historical value, regrettable. In short, difficult city and barely picturesque. Walled City's surroundings improve a little, but not too much either. I do not recommend it for more than some tour and a few days.
Cool walled city and architecture within but a day or so is about all you need. It’s blazing hot and vendors constantly harass you. more »
Lovely city with a great art and food scene. I highly suggest that you visit. The people are very friendly, great vacation experience
Very safe area with all of the locals and tourists. Lots of fun entertainment also (belly dancers, body paint, Michael Jackson, break dancers, etc.). Prices are reasonable and a lot of history here. Definitely the main attraction for Cartagena. You will be heavily sold to/solicited, so be warned.
