Take a rejuvenating dip into the pool of Volcan de Lodo El Totumo (Mud Volcano), one of Colombia's dirtiest--but healthiest--attractions. According to legend, the 15 m (49 ft) mound was once a proper volcano, spewing lava and frightening the villagers. In order to protect his flock from the obvious work of the Devil, a local priest sprinkled the crater with some holy water, turning it instantly into a mud pool. Today, the volcano's claim to fame is the therapeutic properties of its mud, which attracts huge numbers of tourists. Access the mud pool via a staircase. Consider getting a massage from one of the pool's attendants, or just head straight for the mud. Follow up with a bath in the nearby river, where another group of attendants can help you rinse off. Many hotels and hostels in Cartagena offer organized tours to the volcano. • For the ultimate experience I would say: 1) go early and 2) Arrange self transport! We left with a taxi driver (price negotiated) already at 6.45 hours to the volcano. We were there a little hour later. Clothes left in taxi, entrance fee of 10,000 COP and hup the mud in. You will not escape the masseur, the personal accompaniment (photos) and the washing women. We paid every 10,000 COP per person. We were even alone in the volcano and have so the most beautiful pictures and videos. Super Experience! Oh yeah when washing should all clothes off

  • It is a well-known place in the area for tourist visits. I was with friends and mud baths, the year in the swamp and the typical dishes that sell around it make this panorama a delicious place to share.

  • Amazing experience just one thing, the stairs to and from the volcano are extremely DANGEROUS! I slipped a few times going down. If you’re someone who doesn’t have much upper body strength, that one slip will send you straight to the emergency room! Other than that, enjoy! It’s a relaxing yet scary experience. PS - You will not drown.
  • Do it!!!! AMAZING FUN!!! Get the massage.
