Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Bolivar Department / Cartagena District / Cartagena / Torre del Reloj
See one of the best-known architectural symbols of the city and the main gateway to the old town at Torre del Reloj. The 30 m (98 ft) tower--part of the city walls guarding the inner section of old houses and churches from the sea--was originally built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. A statue of Pedro de Heredia, the city's founder, dominates a square full of restaurants, shops, and street vendors. In the past, slave traders would pass under the tower; today, herds of tourists cluster on the site. Browse the market with handicrafts and old books, or, if interested, catch a horse-drawn carriage ride from here. Probably my favorite place inside the walled city of Cartagena. There are many beautiful shops, bars and restaurants around this area. But what really takes the price it's the very talented performers dancing to classic Colombian salsa and other genres.
It seems that this is the iconic photo spot for Cartegena. Be sure to get a photo with the colorfully-dressed ladies - and be sure to have them put a bowl of fruit on your head :-)
