Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, Cartagena

4.4
Wander the mighty fortifications of Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, which played a crucial role in protecting gold shipped back to Spain by conquistadors in the New World. Originally completed in 1536 and expanded twice in the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex system of bunkers, batteries, and parapets represents one of the most formidable accomplishments in the history of Spanish military architecture. Walk the walls, explore the maze-like network of tunnels that links the different parts of the fort, and enjoy panoramic views from its highest point. You'll find little written information throughout the castle, so rent an audio guide if you want to learn about its history. • Beautiful place and still in very good condition and well maintained. It was not crowded during my visit around 2 pm. Very nice view. Admission fee is 25000 pesos. Very safe and you can have an excellent peak on the city and capture nice photos. It is recommended to visit before sunset to have an excellent view.
  • Great fort with a lot of history. The walk up is not long but with the weather being hot and humid you have to be aware of.your physical ability. A few of the older members of the group couldn't make it to the top. I would say that 95% of people can make it. Great sight lines views of the city.
