#4 of 41 in Museums in Bogota
Walk through pre-Columbian history at National Museum of Colombia, which occupies 104 cells of a former prison designed by English architect Thomas Reed. This 19th-century prison, turned into a museum in 1948, features a collection of over 20,000 items, including works of indigenous and Afro-Colombian artists. To get some insight into prison life, visit room 16 on the third floor, and don't miss the nearly 1,500-years-old Muisca mummies on the ground floor. English-language placards on each floor provide background information on the exhibited items. Don't forget to check out the gardens and the glass pavilion cafe. • It is the oldest museum in the country. It is divided into four sections: art, history, archaeology and ethnography. It is very varied has paintings and sculptures from the colonial period to the present day. To get there, you can take the TransMilenio to the same station called the National Museum.

  • I wish I had got the audio guide so that I could better understand the ground floor exhibition. The art on levels 1 and 2 is absolutely beautiful. such a range of pieces and arranged beautifully allowing you to truly get lost in this mammoth space. The cafe outside looked great and whilst we didn't try the food is recommend it for the peaceful vibes. Highly recommend if you want to see Colombian art!
  • Very interesting place. Show where we coming from, and how much we are changed in 12000 years. Very instructive explanation of the gold artifact manufacturing. Lots of different views of or past and the origin of our culture. Cheap entrance. Allow to take pictures. Nice store at the exit.
