Built between 1708 and 1723, Sao Francisco Church and Convent is celebrated for its exuberant interior decoration including an important repository of Baroque art. As you approach the façade, you'll see a large stone cross and volute columns influenced by Mannerist architecture. Inside, all the walls, pillars, vaults, and ceilings are covered by golden sculptures made from gilt woodwork and ornate paintings. Blue and white tiles called azulejo depicting scenes from the life of St Francis of Assisi cover the lower parts of the walls in the main chapel and transept. The Portuguese-Brazilian Baroque gilt woodwork that you'll see in this church is a perfect example of igreja dourada, or "golden church." Ela é realmente impressionante, vale muito a visita (custa R$5, porém não aceitam cartão e a funcionária foi super grosseira ao me falar que não tinha troco, só consegui entrar porque estava com um am... more »It is really impressive, it is worth the visit (costs $5, but do not accept card and the employee was super rude to tell me that there was no change, only managed to enter because she was with a friend and he paid). I also liked the murals with lessons underneath, it's really fun and interesting.
My time in Salvador was of learning, dancing and exploring. Amazing experience that I will certainly repeat.
This building was breathtaking. It holds a lot of history. To learn that enslaved Africans were who completed the work to make the cathedral as ornate and opulent as it is brought tears to my eyes. The main room is covered in gold. It is truly a sight to see.
