Trip Planner: South America / Brazil / State of Rio de Janeiro / Rio de Janeiro / Parque Nacional Tijuca
Discover the world’s largest urban hand-planted rainforest at Parque Nacional Tijuca, established in 1961 to protect a fragile ecosystem of hundreds of species of plants and animals, many of which are threatened by extinction. The rainforest plays an important role in the city’s fresh water supply, and covers a huge area of over 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi). In addition to sheltering the rainforest, the park features several tourist attractions, including the colossal Christ the Redeemer sculpture. Also contained within the park’s grounds are the Cascatinha Waterfall and the Mayrink Chapel, with murals painted by artist Candido Portinari. Use the park’s picnic facilities and explore the rainforest on your own, or by joining one of many guided hikes and sightseeing walks offered in the area. Make Parque Nacional Tijuca a centerpiece of your Rio de Janeiro vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Rio de Janeiro holiday tool.

Parque Nacional Tijuca Reviews
We had a nice jeep ride without a roof, the guide forgot to warn us that going up the temperature would be low and we were cold but it did us good because we were too hot in Rio more »
Beautiful national park on outskirts of Rio. 4 wheel drive tour was rather windy and bumby. Lively waterfall. Some great flora and fauna. Not much to see in terms if birds/ amimals. Worth going if..... more »
One of the piece of famous Brazilian rainforest. Plan your visit in which direction you want to go. Leave before sunset as it gets super dark inside the forest after sunset. I visited three peaks in one day and had to leave after the sunset and I was by myself and you could hear the animals' sounds after sunset. Enjoy this beautiful place in Rio and take care of nature. Do not through any kind of waste or literally anything in the woods and wild.
I only got to experience a small section of this national park, but it is so vast and expansive that you can spend a whole day exploring. I checked out the region surrounding the Chris de redeemer area and it was amazing. Full of wildlife and greenery it is a nice change of pace from the beach/city aspect of Rio
