Escadaria Selaron, Rio de Janeiro

4.4
Admire the colors and shapes of broken glass and ceramics built into Escadaria Selaron, a set of artistically renovated steps straddling Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods. These 215 steps stretched over 125 m (410 ft) feature an explosion of colors built into mosaics by a Chilean-born artist. One of the most charming attractions of Rio de Janeiro, the steps have over 2,000 tiles. The author Jorge Selaron, a painter and sculptor, began the project in 1990 by renovating the dilapidated steps outside his house. • Lovely, singular place full of colour and magic. It's a must to take a picture of yourself at this incredible place in Lapa!  more »
  • Could not see the steps the day we were there because of the terrible crowd. Go early. Igt was a Sunday but still. If you want to see the steps choose your time carefully for your visit.  more »

  • If you don't like crowds then I'm sorry, research the least crowded times and enjoy at your own pace. However we expected a crowd and enjoyed ourselves anyway! The historical value of the art work made us smile at how thoughtful and dedicated people can be! Please enjoy this walkway by the wonderful Chilean artist who's name is escaping me currently!?!!
  • Really enjoyed to see this living art! Weekends are much busier but maybe that makes it more fun? Don't fall into the trap of joining the first "photo" queue at the very bottom of the stairs!
