Capela Dourada, Recife

4.6
Visit Capela Dourada, a jewel of Brazilian Baroque, which may even go unnoticed by those passing by in the streets. Peruse the various well-preserved rare images and religious artifacts, including the golden cross of Christ suspended with silver and gold rays shining behind his head. Pay attention to all the material covered in gold, making it no surprise that it’s known as the “golden chapel”. The gardens and courtyard outside serve as a peaceful oasis, providing tranquility from the busyness of the city. • Worth the visit. Very helpful and knowledgeable lay franciscans at the door itching to show you around. Pretty wild stuff, from gold covered walls (not sure how that jives with the poverty vow, but didn't ask ..) to paintings of crucified priests. Definitely worth the visit.
  • A little jewel of colonial church style
